Life @ Work Series - Feminine Wisdom In The Workplace [3]
There is no WE Women until I the Woman is willing to stand up and speak for herself. Feminine wisdom in the workplace awaits those that are in the workplace to speak their truth and stop following systems that diminish the essence of who you are. Think, before you become robotic, and immune to the humanity of the people you engage with. This requires courage; the courage to honour your feminine selves.
The Denial Of The Feminine Is Seen Very Clearly In The Workplace. Not so much in the lack of her physical presence but in the ‘way and the how’ our work lives exclude her feminine characteristics.
The rise of the mechanical being — the human doing, follows in the footsteps of industrialisation, whereby machines replaced people. Now we have the mechanicalisation of people as their lives are directed by the technology of systems and measurements of their output. The ethos of the human as a production unit governs many business operations. The term human resources is apt.
Currently whilst the human acts as a interface between the customer and the organisation, the reality is that many have little of their relational selves in their exchanges. Humans administer what the systems determines is so. Unless one complies with the system which is programmed to elicit core data before it allows the ‘human doing’ to enter the next piece of data, nothing can be effected. If you the client does not agree to answer a question that seems out of line with the core request, the transaction halts. There is no space for discretion, common sense, or empathy on the part of the ‘operator’. With every conversation recorded most dare not step out of line. The human is thus being conditioned to seek only facts and disregard all else. In other words quantitative date takes precedence and no qualitative data is factored into any equation. These systems in turn determine the fabric of societies as the operators of the system are conditioned not to think. The script does it all for them.
I gained an insight into the mechanicalisation of the work place in respect of call centres, when I phoned to close a bank account. It was my fourth request. I said to the call centre personnel — a woman “do you think non actioning of a simple request is satisfactory? She had the good grace to say no ‘but that she is not allowed to say so because everything is recorded’. These few words said it all. Our common decency towards another is being eroded by a system that squeezes out the individual. In doing so organisations are abdicating responsibility. The practice of not responding is common place. It is the women with natural caring instincts who notice the exclusion by the work place of empathy and who are brave enough to say so. They know that empathy matters without which she becomes a mechanical being divorced not only from others, but her very self.
When you lead by example you bring contrast to situations. It is through contrast that we come to know our values. Those that share your philosophies will be given occasion to pause and take up their own mantel; encouraged by your lead to lead their-selves. In turn they bring into being their particular strengths. We all benefit when we hold precious who we are as human beings. Use systems as a tool to assist you but let not the system use you as a tool. Let not a machine be the director of your life.
When we think and act for ourselves, contrary to the meme that makes this ‘wrong’, we imbue our strengths. Your role as a human-being is to awaken to the awareness of your authentic self. You are unique and your uniqueness holds the seeds of your gifts. Gifts that others need. Gifts that enable you to serve by doing what you love. Your role is to sprout those seeds and then grow them. Your work roles are preparing you for bringing into being who you are capable of being. Don’t waste time by doing things in a way that is an anathema to who you truly are.
This feminine makes her presence known through her choices. She knows that she determines what she wants and as for systems that are an inert control system she will have none of it. She stops following another’s scripts and writes her own. She knows through eons of observation that the only way to bring positive change into her world is to be it.
Never has their being a greater need for expressing the-feminine than now and in particular the workplace. There is a yearning for the presence of the-feminine. And the workplace where she spends much of her time is where she can effect great change as she prepares herself to act for herself. A life lived on your terms within the workplace is where you bridge the chasm as to what is and what can be.
