Anchor Series - Grounding [2]
Living Life Deliberately Comes More Naturally To Some, Than Others. The means for living a more deliberate life is to be ‘anchored’ for a firm foundation within self provides a surer footing when living our daily lives. The opposite of being anchored may be referred to as being scattered, easily distracted, hyper-active, tendency to be stressed, emotional, highly sensitive and in terms of we women many other terms that are judgemental. From the perspective of those who have achieved a measure of awareness ‘grounding’ is key to having more life enhancing experiences. Interestingly enough it's a term used in physics meaning to earth or ground. We are after all energy bodies and managing our energy is essential to managing ourselves.
Grounding in its simplest form is pausing and taking a deep breath. Yet these two simple practices are not widely known or used. Pausing and deep breathing are refreshingly simple practices that foster awareness and make you feel centered and able to act from a place of clarity.
Inherent in the act of pausing is reconnecting with self. Think about your coffee break. When we consciously drink a cup of coffee we are taking a break from our mind-work. We redirect our attention to savouring an experience. It’s a form of nurturing which provides a space for you to reconnect with your self. I love my coffee and tea breaks having perfected them into an art form. They have become a companion in my life, a ritual of sorts with china cups, teapots, and tea trays for different times of the day and the seasons. This is my way of bringing joy into my life-stream. These pauses give me sustenance for they facilitate my return to ‘awareness’. Being engrossed in projects is all very well but like meditation the ‘gap’ or blank space is where we add value to what we are doing and thus helps to facilitate what we want to achieve.
Beginning ones day by deliberately pausing is arguably more difficult given our work days are often automated such that we become 'present' to ourselves only when we arrived at work, if at all. Pausing before you leave your private space, most often your bedroom, is the ideal. If I am tempted to 'not' pause my words to myself are "Carol you are giving away your point of power". For pausing assists you to make space for collecting your thoughts and reconnecting with self. Once you walk out of your private space the activity of the day begins. Yes, I too am keen to begin the activity of the day. Yet the beginning moment of a day sets the scene for how you want to live that day. And with 'the present' determining your future, then grounding adds potency to your endeavours for your life.
My pausing ritual is as follows. My grounding spot is by the window facing the sun. Standing, I anchor myself through my breath, consciously breathing in and out. I focus on each part of my body noticing my feet, legs, thighs tummy chest, etc. To begin with this is likely to be a mental endeavour. Your objective is for this to be a ‘sensing’ endeavour. I then redirect my attention back to my feet, feeling my feet upon the floor. I imagine my feet as my roots spreading into mother earth. I imagine an oak tree, embodying the energy of the roots of the tree into my feet. I then mentally, draw in the sun light through my crown chakra and release through my feet, any denseness I may be holding in my body, returning it to mother earth for transmutation. I stand with this for a while and then conclude by engendering a feeling a gratitude for enacting this process. It's not always easy to so I pat myself on back. So there your have it. Easy peasy once you realise the value this practice adds to your life-stream.
The key here is to customise whatever practice you read about. Make it yours. Change the words the order and location. Do what feels right for you. Some days you will be more present than others, however let not that dis-sway you. I have found that in times where one is still processing the effect of some experience, I tend to shy away from my grounding practice, yet it’s the very practice that leads you out of the mire you may be feeling.
Grounding ideally is done with bare feet on the grass which by the way is a particularly good remedy for jet lag. It can be done throughout the day as required. Look for and walk on grass whenever you are out and about. It’s a true connection to mother earth and thus natures intelligence, and it’s your very own source of that which supports you.
